The Cold War and the race to the Moon between the United States and the Soviet Union were escalating when Ed White of the Gemini 4 crew made the first American spacewalk, or EVA (extravehicular activity), on June 3, 1965. Soviet Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov set the pace with the first spacewalk three months earlier on March 18, 1965, from the Voskhod 2.
