The cost of college textbooks

Adding insult to the injury of runaway college tuition and boarding costs, it's not at all unusual to have to shell out close to $1,000 per semester for textbooks. On average, each textbook costs $100 or more. Of course, you can "sell" them back to same company you bought them from for literally pennies on the dollar and then they'll recirculate them as "used" at 70 percent of the retail cost. Note that your childrens' schools profit on every transaction, new and used.

Now, Cengage Learning, one of the largest textbook sellers is offering an online "rental" plan. I'm all ears - and wallet.

The outrageous cost of texts is bad enough, but when the professor insists that his students buy his textbook, that seems to be a stunning conflict of interest. Yet our schools tolerate this in the interest of pacifying the faculty.
